Which Agentic Workflows Every Developer and Team Should Implement

Introduction
Teams are adding agentic workflows one at a time: PR review, code generation that opens a draft PR, task breakdown from requirements. The question isn’t whether to automate, but which workflows to adopt first and what typically blocks or unblocks progress. This post gives a prioritised list—what to implement now vs later and why—so you can focus where leverage is highest. The guidance is tool-independent; you can implement the same workflows with different agents and platforms.
Landscape
Past: Manual everything; then assistive tools (completion, suggestions) with no real workflow. First agent-style use was a single prompt for one task (e.g. “write a test,” “review this file”); no pipeline, no draft PR—the human copied or applied the result.
Present: Many teams have one agentic workflow: usually PR review (AI comments on PRs) or code generation with draft PR (agent opens PR, human reviews and merges). Often each run is human-triggered. Early adopters run a “harness” style: humans steer, agents execute; repo as system of record; a short map (e.g. AGENTS.md) and structured docs; execution plans; agent-to-agent review; doc-gardening and cleanup agents. What’s automated today: PR review (comments, sometimes suggested patches); code + draft PR for bugs, CRUD, and features; some test generation and release notes. Task breakdown from requirements is emerging but usually needs human oversight. Design, prioritisation, and final approval still sit with humans; full “no manually-written code” is rare. Agent “ghosting” and review load are real limitations.
Future: More agent-to-agent review; more workflows (test gen, release notes, doc sync) in the same repo; execution plans as first-class artifacts; recurring background agents (doc-gardening, tech-debt cleanup). Further out: end-to-end feature from one prompt for some setups; task breakdown good enough for direct use with light human edit.
Progression and Sticking Points
Progression looks like: no workflow automation → one workflow (e.g. PR review) → several (review + code+draft PR) → full harness (humans steer, many workflows, repo as system of record, agents do most execution).
What usually blocks teams:
- Trust and quality — “Is the agent output good enough?” Unblock with clear acceptance criteria, validation (tests, lint), human at gates (e.g. merge), and a feedback loop into docs and tooling.
- Context and legibility — The agent can’t use what it can’t see. Unblock with repo as source of truth, a short map (e.g. AGENTS.md) and structured docs, and progressive disclosure.
- Throughput vs attention — Agent output can exceed human review capacity. Unblock with smaller PRs, agent-to-agent review, a clear merge philosophy (fix-forward vs block), and automation of cleanup (e.g. recurring doc-gardening).
- Entropy and drift — Agents replicate existing patterns, including bad ones. Unblock with golden principles in the repo, recurring cleanup agents, and mechanical enforcement (linters, structural tests).

What Exists Today (Tool Snapshot)
You don’t need a specific vendor to act on this list. PR review is well served by GitHub Actions (e.g. ai-pr-reviewer, pr-review-agent with MCP), AutoAgent, CursorCommands, Vercel Agent, and Harness Code Review Agent. Code + draft PR is the standard pattern in GitHub Copilot (mission control, child PRs), Cursor, Codex CLI (Harness), Claude Code, and others: prompt → agent → draft PR → human review. Task breakdown appears in tools like GeneUS, ADaPT, Task Master, and Orchestre, often with output to Jira. The harness pattern—repo as system of record, AGENTS.md as map, structured docs, linters, doc-gardening agent—is tool-independent; you can approximate it with different adapters.
Conclusion
Start with PR review and code + draft PR (bug fixes, then CRUD, then features with clear specs). Add task breakdown and test generation as you tighten acceptance criteria and review capacity.
